Hardwood timber (jarrah, blackwood, spotted gum, walnut, cherry)
By the board — source from sustainable suppliers where possible.
Softwood timber (pine, cedar)
For painted pieces or lighter items.
Timber offcuts
For small products — good margin from otherwise wasted timber.
Food-safe finishing oil
Rubio Monocoat, linseed oil, or tung oil — mandatory for food contact items. Never use polyurethane on food contact surfaces.
Beeswax finish
For food contact items and as a final coat over oil.
Sandpaper (various grits)
80 through 400 — thorough sanding is the difference between good and great.
Wood glue (food-safe)
For laminated boards and joinery.
Dowels and biscuits
For joinery.
Brass / copper hardware
For handles and feet.

Food safety compliance for food contact items
Chopping boards, spoons, and utensils must use food-safe finishes only. No polyurethane or solvent-based finishes on food contact surfaces. Use linseed oil, tung oil, or food-safe wax.
Children's toy safety compliance
If selling wooden toys — must meet AS/NZS 8124 toy safety standard. No toxic finishes, no small parts for children under 3, no drawstring hazards.
